For Alocasia corms, I’d use a clean → sanitize → rinse → optional vitamin/root-support soak → sprout routine. The biggest thing is not overdoing the chemicals—corms have living tissue that can be damaged by strong or prolonged soaks.  Read Below & Enjoy!


  • Clean the corms first. Gently remove soil/PON and loose dead material. Rinse under lukewarm water. You can peel away the dry brown outer sheath if it comes off easily, especially around the growth point, but don’t dig into firm tissue.


  • Sanitize with hydrogen peroxide. For ordinary healthy corms, use 3% hydrogen peroxide diluted 1:1 with water and soak for about 5 minutes. If they’re especially clean and freshly harvested, even a brief 2–3 minute treatment is plenty. I would not soak Alocasia corms in straight 3% peroxide for 15–30 minutes; that’s more aggressive than necessary.


  • Rinse. Give them a quick rinse with clean/distilled water after sanitizing. Inspect them at this point. A good corm should feel firm, not squishy. If there is a tiny questionable spot, trim only obviously rotten tissue with a sterilized blade and sanitize again briefly.


  • Do the vitamin/root-support soak separately. After peroxide, I’d use distilled or RO water with a very dilute vitamin/rooting supplement. If you’re using something like Superthrive, I’d stay around ¼ of the normal label strength for corms. Soak approximately 15–30 minutes. More is not better; an overnight vitamin bath isn't necessary.


  • Then put them into your propagation setup. I particularly like shallow water propagation on a heat mat for freshly harvested corms, or damp sphagnum/perlite once they start rooting. Keep the growth point above the water and only the bottom portion of the corm touching/submerged. Warmth around 75–82°F is excellent.


Vitamins aren't what make or break corm propagation. Warmth, oxygen, moisture, and preventing rot are far more important. A firm healthy corm can sprout beautifully with nothing but clean water and good conditions. The vitamin soak is more of an optional assist than a requirement.


I’d focus much less on the vitamin soak and much more on sanitation, airflow, and how wet the corm stays. Mold on the old outer sheath is fairly common; mold invading the actual corm is the problem.


  • Remove the brown outer sheath. Gently peel off as much loose/dry material as possible. That material is often where mold gets established. Don't cut into the firm corm.


  • Wash thoroughly. Rinse away every bit of soil, PON debris, or decaying root material.


  • Use fresh 3% hydrogen peroxide. Since you're having a persistent mold problem, I'd use straight 3% peroxide for about 3–5 minutes rather than a long soak. Then rinse with distilled water. (This is different from my gentler routine for clean, healthy corms.)


  • Skip the vitamin soak initially. Vitamins/rooting additives aren't necessary for germination and can add organic material to a warm, wet environment—the exact environment mold enjoys. Get the corm stable first.


  • Let the surface dry briefly. Put the sanitized corms on a clean paper towel for roughly 15–30 minutes. You're not trying to dry out the corm—just don't put a dripping-wet corm immediately into a sealed humid container.


  • Use a clean propagation container and fresh medium. Don't put sanitized corms back into a cup, sphagnum, water, or perlite that previously contained mold. Wash and disinfect reusable containers.


  • Keep them moist, not swampy. If you're using shallow water, only the very bottom of the corm should contact the water. Don't submerge half the corm. If you're using sphagnum, squeeze it until it's merely damp rather than wet.


  • Give them some air exchange. High humidity + heat + stagnant air is a mold factory. You can still use a humidity dome/container, but open it periodically or provide small ventilation holes.


  • I actually think you'd have better luck moving away from standing water for a batch and testing damp perlite in clear cups.


  • Put about 1–2 inches of rinsed perlite in the bottom. Add enough distilled water that the perlite is moist, but don't leave a pool of water covering the bottom of the corm. Nestle only the bottom ~¼ of the corm into the perlite, growth point upward. Cover loosely and keep around 75–80°F.


  • Perlite gives you that combination Alocasia corms love:


  • moisture + humidity + a LOT of oxygen


  • …and it gives fungi considerably less organic material to colonize than sphagnum.


  • One more thing: don't automatically throw away a corm because you see fuzzy white mold. If the corm underneath is still rock-hard, wash the mold off, sanitize it again, and restart it in fresh medium. I've seen perfectly viable corms mold multiple times and still sprout.


If the corm is still firm, it gets admitted to Corm ICU. The goal is to stop the cycle of mold → peroxide → mold → peroxide while keeping enough moisture for it to root.

  • Get it completely clean. Remove all loose brown sheath, dead roots, and visible mold under running water. Don't scrape healthy firm tissue. If there is a genuinely soft/brown area, remove only that damaged tissue with a sterilized blade.


  • Sanitize it. For a corm that has already developed mold, soak it in fresh 3% hydrogen peroxide for 3–5 minutes. I'd reserve straight peroxide for these rescue cases rather than routinely doing it to every healthy corm.


  • Rinse with distilled water, then place it on a fresh paper towel for about 20–30 minutes. You want the outside no longer dripping wet.


  • Skip Superthrive/vitamins/rooting hormones for now. A struggling corm already contains what it needs to initiate growth. Right now our enemy is fungus, and I don't want extra organic material sitting in a warm propagation chamber.


  • Put it in fresh, damp perlite. Use a small clear cup with roughly 1–2 inches of perlite. Rinse the perlite first. Wet it with distilled water and drain away excess. It should be damp throughout but there should not be standing water around the corm.


  • Barely seat the corm. Growth point up. Only the bottom ~20–25% should be nestled into the perlite. Most of the corm remains above it. This is important for your mold problem because the corm's surface gets much more oxygen.


  • Give it humidity AND ventilation. Put the cup in a clear propagation box or loosely covered container. Aim for high humidity, but don't hermetically seal it. Open it briefly every day or provide a little ventilation.


  • Keep it warm. Around 75–80°F is a great target. A heat mat is fine, but I'd use a thermostat if possible. Don't cook the little bastard.


  • Don't keep disturbing or peroxide-treating it just because you see something white.


  • White fuzz on the surface + corm still hard: clean it off and improve ventilation. You don't necessarily need another peroxide bath immediately.


  • Corm firm + tiny white bumps/nubs: STOP. Those may be developing roots. Don't scrub them off thinking they're mold.


  • Brown/translucent + soft: that's rot. Remove the affected tissue until you reach healthy firm tissue, sanitize, let the wound dry/callus, and restart in brand-new perlite.


  • Firm but doing absolutely nothing: leave it alone. Some Alocasia corms can sit there looking like a potato with no ambition whatsoever and then suddenly take off.



  • Once you have healthy roots around ½–1 inch long and/or the growth point is clearly developing, I'd stop treating it like a contaminated corm.


  • At that point you can gradually increase moisture and eventually move it into your preferred growing medium. That's when I'd consider a very dilute nutrient/root-support solution, rather than soaking the dormant corm beforehand.


  • And because you're dealing with enough corms to sell, I'd run an experiment: put 10 freshly harvested corms in your current method and 10 in damp perlite using this protocol. Label them and compare mold, rooting and sprouting after 2–4 weeks. That'll tell us very quickly whether the propagation method itself is what's driving your mold problem.
