Make Your Home Beautiful with Bougie Botanical

PON, a mineral-based growing medium for plants, promoting healthy root growth.

What is PON?

PON is a clean, soil-free growing medium made from porous mineral stones. Instead of traditional potting soil, the plant grows in a blend that holds moisture and nutrients while allowing plenty of oxygen to reach the roots.

Bougie Botanical PON is made with:

50% pumice · 25% zeolite · 25% lava rock

This balanced blend provides moisture retention, airflow, drainage, and physical support without the compacting or mess associated with ordinary soil.

Why Grow Plants in PON?

PON gives roots access to both moisture and oxygen. Its mineral particles absorb water and slowly release it as the plant needs it, while the spaces between the particles help prevent roots from sitting in dense, waterlogged soil.

PON can offer:

  • Better airflow around the roots
  • More consistent moisture
  • Less soil compaction
  • Easier monitoring of root health
  • Fewer fungus gnats than traditional soil
  • A clean, attractive appearance
  • Excellent support for semi-hydroponic growing

It is especially useful for plant owners who struggle with inconsistent watering or want a cleaner alternative to potting soil.

What Plants Can Grow in PON?

Many tropical houseplants adapt well to PON, including:

Alocasias, Anthuriums, Monsteras, Philodendrons, Syngoniums and other aroids.

At Bougie Botanical, we particularly like PON for Alocasias because their roots benefit from a combination of steady moisture and excellent airflow.

Not every plant responds exactly the same way, and plants transitioning from soil may need time to develop roots that are better suited to semi-hydro growing.

When Should You Use PON?

PON may be a good choice when:

  • A plant repeatedly develops root rot in dense soil
  • You want more control over moisture levels
  • You are growing plants in clear jars or semi-hydro containers
  • You want to reduce fungus-gnat problems
  • You are rooting corms or young plants
  • You prefer a clean, reusable mineral substrate

PON can be used in containers with drainage holes or in semi-hydro setups with a small water reservoir.

How Do You Water PON?

Containers with drainage

Water thoroughly until water runs through the container. Allow excess water to drain, then water again when the PON begins to dry.

Semi-hydro containers

Keep a small reservoir of water below the main root zone. The PON will wick moisture upward through the container.

Do not completely submerge the roots. The goal is steady moisture with plenty of oxygen—not a permanently flooded container.

Does PON Contain Nutrients?

PON itself does not provide enough nutrition to support a plant indefinitely. Plants growing in PON should receive a diluted fertilizer suitable for hydroponic or semi-hydroponic growing.

Start lightly, particularly with recently transferred plants, young plants, corms, or damaged root systems.

Moving a Plant From Soil to PON

Remove as much soil from the roots as possible and rinse them gently. Trim away any soft, hollow, black, or rotting roots before placing the plant into clean PON.

Some older soil-grown roots may decline after the transfer. This does not always mean the plant is failing. The plant may be replacing them with new roots better adapted to the new growing method.

During the transition:

  • Keep the plant warm
  • Provide bright, indirect light
  • Avoid heavy fertilizer
  • Monitor the roots and water level
  • Expect a temporary adjustment period

Is PON Reusable?

Yes. Mineral PON can often be reused after old roots and organic material are removed and the stones are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

Bougie Botanical PON

Our PON blend is prepared for plant collectors who want an airy, attractive and practical alternative to traditional soil.

A strong page layout would use five images: a close-up of the natural PON blend, PON pouring into a glass jar, a Silver Dragon growing in PON, visible healthy roots inside a clear container, and a small corm progressing into a baby Alocasia.
